I loved the idea of the game but had a sneaking suspicion that the folks originating this software would never finish what they started here. The climate of the software market at the time, don't ya know. Too bad. What little I played was very interesting. |

GET OUT YOU WORM!
I was really disappointed that all the other Alternate Reality game modules never got released. This game was awesome. My only complaint was that you moved soooo slow! It got really tiresome to watch the screen barely inch by. |

I played this first also on the atari 800 xl then on the ST. I noticed that thieves no longer stole gold from you though on the ST which was a big let down as half the fun of the game was getting some gold and legging it to the bank to bank it until it was safe to go out and purchase what you wanted. Also I never once found a treasure finding potion on the ST version :( However 20 years later I am about to play it again :) |

My favorite RPG of all time. I played this game for months. Originally, the 8-bit Atari version, then the ST version. The ST version is definitely more playable with so many more options. Still, I loved the music processor in the 8-bit version. The C64 and Amiga versions weren't nearly as good! |

This game has a very strange aspect: there is no deeper sense or a goal or something you have to achieve. You can just walk around in a city and meet people, orks and the strangest kinds of monsters (including black slime). But I did this for weeks and months and nowadays I'm playing it again. It's even most fun to draw a map of the city and all its hidden doors. There are several fanpages on the web, mainly for the C64 version. Even studio-versions of the FANTASTIC music are available on CD!

One of the best RPGs of the ST times. You walk around the city, earn money by applying for different jobs, killing or outsmarting your enemy.
You can also open accounts in the city's banks. There are lots of streets and locations such as taverns, guilds, smithys, banks, shops and inns; each with its own goods and prizes. Weather effects are also implemented.
For each time of the day (and year) you shoud have the proper clothes (nights are colder than days).
Alternate reality was also written for the atari 800 and not only "The City", but also "The Dungeon". You could step from one adventure to theother with the same character. Although "The Dungeon" was never released for the ST. Too bad because AR is a masterpiece! |
