Yes up untill mame and the playstations R-types. the pc engine was the closest they ever got to porting the pcb to console. I love R-type, but i think Darious gaiden is the better game.

cool

Apart from the loading time, the game was quite good for the time, I bought the original and was particularly impressed with the "option" feature, IMHO it was way better than Blood Money for instance. The only drawback I remember about the gameplay was a sprite collision detection that was a little bit too "pessimistic".

I have never try that game but its sound like a good one so i better check the MAME version right away!

I dunno... apart from the lack of the parralax backgrounds and the speed, this port was very faithful to the original. Love the music, which is better than arcade imo.

You can download the game from Automation disk 46 (ftp://ftp.cs.tu-berlin.de/pub/atari/games/Automation/A_046.ST). You can see Power Pack instructions from http://www.geocities.com/yotisrx7/PowerPack.html#R-Type.

i heard the pc engine had a good port, people were buying the console just to play it.
bazfan wrote ...2002-11-12 14:17:31
To the Estee: I'm afraid your wrong,The PLAYSTATION 1,did a perfect port in it R-types collection ;)

The only good version of this game was the original, the arcade version. I have never, I mean NEVER, seen a conversion of this game that was even close to the arcade. The Sega Genesis version is OK, but no one in the console or computer business was able to port this one correctly.

Actually the reason it was a 5 or 6 framer game (i.e. chugged like a steam train) prolly has a lot to do with a certain Mr. Karl Jeffery's coding techniques heh like the infamous 'Egg Whack' routine(s) I belive. Still what does Karl care his only big suit CEO with squillions of quids and owns Climax Development etc. blah@ www.climax.co.uk ...me I'm still not loaded :| - arse !!!
guy ross wrote ...2002-01-06 15:15:52
I think I meant good conversion, there... sorry

One of my first experiences of an atari st game. my friend had it from the power pack ( i think...).. took ages to load, then scared the sh*t out of us with the lightning!.. thing is, It is a good game to play, I think it's a god conversion.. still.. what do I know?
ManTra wrote ...2002-01-03 05:51:34
I found it a good game, great music by wally bebebm true to the arcade, and the scrolling was okay, graphics we're good only gripe about the scrolling, the parallax layer was absent. Difficult game but i beat it! eventually could beat it with losing only 1 or 2 lives.. :)

Actually the ST version isn't that good after all. It is laggy and not very smooth. It will not run on most emulators.
